Deloitte’s Sports Business Group’s latest report “The Untouchables, Football Money League” shows that only one club in Europe’s top 20 by turnover generates over 40% of its revenue from match day activity.

Unsurprisingly this is Arsenal following their move to the Emirates Stadium in 2006/07. Deloitte highlights the reasons behind this - “The move to the Emirates Stadium in 2006/07 provided a step change in the Gunners’ revenue with 2009/10 revenues 69% higher than only five years ago. The increased stadium capacity and premium pricing – and notably the expanded corporate hospitality capacity – have provided more than half of that growth.”

Overall Real Madrid remain top of both the overall Money League and also the match day revenue league. Manchester United and Arsenal are second and third in the match day league and are the only other two clubs to generate over €100m in match day revenue (equivalent to more than €3.5m per match).

Richard Cheesman, Director: Business Development and Funding at ISG commented “what this shows is the huge opportunity that exists for some clubs to close the revenue gap on their competitors through developing their stadium and particularly their premium offerings”.
